Fifty years ago we probably wouldn't be reading an article such as this. You want to know why? Back then people did things for themselves. Now we tend to let others do things for us. Is this really a wise choice? With the way the economy is today we had better to learn how to become more self sufficient.
What went wrong?
From infancy to early childhood we strive to become independent and free thinkers. Just watch a baby sometime struggling to take their first steps. Do they give up? Not usually, it's try and try again until their wobbly little legs take them zooming across the floor. Listen to a two year old who will tell you when you attempt to take over for them that, "I can do it myself".
Excuses, Excuses
Somewhere along the line we as adults lose the idea that we can become self sufficient. We have become a society of excuse makers. Most of us tend to rely on others to do things for us for three main reasons:
1. We don't know how to do something so we "hire out" the job.
2. It is much easier to pass the task on to someone else than face it ourselves.
3. We are just "too busy".
Ways To Make The Change
The first step in becoming more self sufficient is that we must make the decision to start doing things for ourselves and stick with it. Just because we don't know how to do something doesn't mean we can't learn it. If we choose to do things for ourselves there are many rewards that are both intrinsic and frugal in nature.
We also have become a society that doesn't tend to take the time to enjoy and relish in our own accomplishments. This idea needs to change. We can save money by doing things ourselves and in the long run we give ourselves a "can do" attitude rather than passing the buck.
Maybe we as adults should all take lessons from children. In their honest approach to learning and growing we just may gain a little insight into what it takes to become more self sufficient.
