Becoming a forensic scientist can be a demanding yet rewarding career choice. Forensic scientists work in a lab analyzing and evaluating things such as DNA and drugs . Students who choose to pursue a career in forensic science are put through rigorous courses to achieve their ultimate goal.
The first step individuals should evaluate before jumping into the field of forensic science is to make sure whether they actually want to deal with the lab side of it or if they are interested in being a forensic investigator. Believe it or not most students often get the two careers mixed up. Once you are certain that you want to become a forensic scientist it is best to work towards your goal as early as high school. While you are in high school it is important to take as much science classes as they offer. In addition to the normal science classes it is always a good idea to take physics courses and high level math courses such as calculus.
Once it is time to enroll in college there are a couple of different options to consider. Most colleges offer an undergraduate forensic scientist degree (B.S.). This degree is essentially a degree in biology or chemistry with a few forensic and criminal justice classes mixed in. If you are looking to obtain a B.S. degree then they will make sure you have all the required courses needed and you might be able to grab an internship as well.
Another option students have is to receive a biology or chemistry degree at any respectable 4-year university. Once you find a university you feel comfortable with you need to choose classes that go along with your major. There are many different types of forensic scientists so it's important to choose classes that focus on what you want to purse.
For example if you are interested in learning about DNA than your focus should be on genetics and molecular biology. After you complete your 4-year course you will be able to apply for jobs in the forensic scientist's field. With this degree you can also enroll yourself back into school to complete a MSFS degree. With an MSFS degree you will most likely be ahead of the competition when competing for entry level jobs or it could lead to a potential promotion.
The key advice most people need to remember is that these types of careers require long hours of preparation and patience. Once you have gone through all the required schooling it may take some time to find a job because of the stiff competition but the right job will present itself eventually. At first it may seem like a lot of work to achieve but the rewards you will receive later are definitely worth your time.
